What are women’s issues?

Women face a wide variety of issues, on multiple levels. Not only do women face issues in their personal life, but they also face challenges on a much broader spectrum. A few struggles that women face on a daily basis include trying to find the balance of being a mother while also having a career, lack of representation in higher up positions, sexism, and the expectations for women to be caregivers but not being given the ability and monetary means to be a full time caretaker. Any one of these issues can be difficult to manage, but to take on all of them continuously can feel like a never-ending uphill climb. This leaves women feeling distressed, discouraged, and overwhelmed with all the tasks they have to overcome on a daily basis

Common reasons women seek therapy

Women can begin their therapy journey for many different reasons. Oftentimes, women might seek therapy if they are struggling with postpartum depression after giving birth to their child. Many also seek mental health assistance if they are noticing an increase in anxiety or thoughts of depression. Another common reason for women to go to therapy can include eating disorders, or struggles in their relationships. Although women might start therapy due to serious issues, this is not always the case. Instead of being in crisis or severe mental health situation, women might pursue therapy with the goal of increasing their self-awareness, learn healthier coping skills, or just wanting to learn more about themselves.

Benefits of female therapist for women’s mental health issues

Although there are many therapists who are qualified to provide mental health help, many women prefer seeing a female therapist for a variety of different reasons. For starters, women might seek out and benefit from a female therapist, as they oftentimes understand sensitive topics and share similar experiences. Topics such as mom-guilt, struggles with body image, postpartum depression, or even struggling with the decision to be a mother are all situations that most women will experience at least once in their life. It is important for clients to feel as though they are understood and that their therapist not only validates their emotions, but can connect with the clients due to their own life experiences.

Another benefit of having a female therapist for women struggling with mental health issues, is that the therapist can help empower their female clients. In today’s society, women have to constantly climb uphill battles, advocate for their own basic human rights, and constantly fight for a seat at the table. Any of these issues can be difficult to navigate through, especially when paired with being a mom, having a career, and trying to juggle your own life challenges. Having a female therapist can help empower their clients to take on these difficult tasks, while also providing them with the tools and skills needed to improve their mental health.

Types of therapy for women’s issues

There are many different types of therapy practices that can be used during sessions, including Behavioral therapy, Art therapy, and Psychotherapy.

Behavioral therapy refers to a type of therapy that helps individuals work through negative or self-destructive behaviors. The purpose of a behavioral therapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), is to work towards changing negative thought patterns, which will then change negative emotions and unwanted behaviors.  CBT is one of the most used strategies to treat mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, etc.

Another type of therapy than can be incredibly beneficial for women would be Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Like CBT, DBT focuses on the intertwinement of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, but approaches these struggles in different ways. With DBT, the client focuses regulating their emotions, “sitting” with unwanted thoughts, and working through the unease of emotional turmoil.

Psychotherapy is another therapy technique used by many therapists that can greatly help women when starting their mental health journey. Psychotherapy is the process of learning about one’s mental illness. This includes learning about signs and symptoms of an illness, exploring emotions, and finding healthy coping strategies.

Art therapy is one type of therapy that might be overlooked, but should be taken into consideration when working with women. Art therapy can be incredibly beneficial as it incorporates a hands-on activity with talk therapy and exploring emotions that come up while completing the artwork. Art therapy has been shown to improve one’s social skills, self-esteem, and help individuals explore what matters most to them and how these things can be utilized in their daily life.
