Emotional Overwhelm
Do you feel like you go from 0-100 and then have a hard time returning to baseline? Being emotionally overwhelmed is like heating up like a microwave but cooling down like an oven. Your emotions intensify quickly but it seems to take forever to calm back down.
Emotional overwhelm can be caused by a variety of factors - biological and social. Some people have a hard time regulating their emotions and feel things stronger than others while others stuff their pain and then explode when it gets to be too much.
I use DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) in order to teach emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
DBT uses mindfulness as a foundation in order to learn about ourselves and the environment so we are able to change the way we react, interpret and interact with others. DBT also teaches valuable skills in getting along with others and how to get our needs met.
